General Motors Co.’s Cruise unit is being suspended by the California Department of Motor Vehicles from operating driverless vehicles in the state, effective immediately.

NHTSA is investigating General Motors’ Cruise autonomous vehicle division after receiving reports of incidents where vehicles may not have used proper caution around pedestrians.

Cruise plans to roll out a suite of technological upgrades intended to make its driverless cars more adept at responding during emergencies, the company said Oct. 12.

Cruise in October will begin testing what it says is “the world’s first purpose-built, wheelchair accessible, self-driving vehicle.”

Robotaxi backlash is intensifying against Waymo and Cruise just as self-driving vehicles begin to gain real traction in San Francisco after years of development.
