Norfolk Southern Corp.’s earnings chugged ahead 2% even though the railroad hauled 4% less freight in the second quarter because it was able to raise its shipping rates.

Railroad giant Norfolk Southern held a ceremonial turning of dirt March 26 to mark construction of the company’s new Midtown Atlanta headquarters, but the process of moving personnel from Virginia to Atlanta already is underway.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County in Pennsylvania is asking Norfolk Southern Corp. for $3 million to reimburse costs incurred during the August derailment at Station Square that disrupted light rail traffic for nearly three weeks.

Norfolk Southern Corp. on Dec. 12 announced officially what had been expected for some time: that it will move its corporate headquarters from Norfolk, Va., to Atlanta.
