Freight transportation will grow “significantly” over the next decade, while trucking’s share of that market will rise steadily, according to a new American Trucking Associations report.

Truck tonnage continued its steady growth last month, rising 4.8% above April 2010 volumes, the 17th straight year-over-year gain, American Trucking Associations reported.

U.S. truck tonnage rose 6.3% in March, the 16th consecutive year-over-year increase, as U.S. economic growth continued even in the face of sharply higher fuel costs, American Trucking Associations reported.

U.S. truck tonnage improved from a year earlier for the 15th straight month, enough to allow fleet executives to pursue higher freight rates yet leave them with worries about how global events could hurt the domestic economy.

Truck tonnage surged 8% in January from a year earlier, helped by continued growth in the manufacturing sector, pushing American Trucking Associations’ tonnage index to its highest level since January 2008.

Freight tonnage ended 2010 on a high note, as American Trucking Associations reported its seasonally adjusted cargo index climbed 4.2% in December to its highest level since early in the recession.
