There was a time when preventive maintenance on trailers was perforned every three months. Then it stretched to four months, and now it’s at six. Connected technology is a big reason why.

Trailer manufacturer Wabash intends to expand the size of its trailers-as-a-service fleet by as much as a factor of four by the end of 2025, an executive told Transport Topics.

When a jury issued a $462 million judgment against Wabash National Corp. last fall, many fleet maintenance managers were concerned.

In addition to installing video-based safety systems in the cabs of their trucks, some fleet operators also are deploying cameras on the side of the truck and even rear cameras on the trailer.

According to ACT Research, U.S. trailer orders for March declined 19% to 13,600 units from 16,800 in the prior-year period, and fell 33.7% from the preliminary total of 20,500 units ordered in February.
