Used Class 8 truck sales in January increased 17.3% compared with the same period the prior year, ACT Research reported.

AutoNation Inc., one of the biggest car dealership chains in the U.S., expects prices for new and used cars to decline this year as manufacturers crank up volumes and offer more incentives to price-sensitive buyers.

When it was new, the window sticker price on a typical 2019 Toyota Tacoma SR double cab pickup was just under $29,000. Two years later, dealers are paying almost $1,000 more than that to buy the same vehicle, even though it’s used.

The price of the average used Class 8 sold in September neared $40,000, building on recent gains, and sales were nearly flat compared with a year earlier, ACT Research reported.

The Class 8 used truck market in August reflected the trend toward improving sales as prices remained below year-earlier levels, conditions that are expected to mark the full year, ACT Research reported.

Used Class 8 vehicles in July were, on average, younger, cost less and had about the same mileage compared to a year earlier, ACT Research reported.

Sales volume and prices of used Class 8 trucks were substantially down in November, according to ACT Research.

Motor carriers that typically purchase new trucks sometimes find themselves in situations where it is expedient to buy used trucks.

The price of the average used Class 8 vehicle in October skidded, as did estimated industry sales, with each falling 19% compared with a year earlier, ACT Research reported.
