WASHINGTON — Advancements in self-driving vehicles merit a uniform set of guidelines that would ensure the safety of motorists and the smooth connectivity of freight corridors, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), an auto industry proponent, said Jan. 25 ahead of the Washington Auto Show.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker signed an executive order Oct. 20 outlining his plan for “The AV Working Group,” his committee on automated vehicles.

The U.S. Department of Transportation last week issued guidelines for testing and deployment of highly automated vehicles. Top administration officials said they want to promote development of self-driving technology to reduce crashes on the nation’s roadways.
