The U.S. freight market slowed in March after a robust February, but data for Q1 of 2025 as a whole suggested a turnaround was underway, according to American Trucking Associations.

American Trucking Associations' freight volume index posts second straight year-over-year gain. ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said, "Growing optimism for the truck freight market after a two-year recession.”   

The freight market experienced a 3% sequential tonnage increase in February as well as its second straight year-over-year gain, furthering optimism it is emerging from its recession.

The freight market didn’t change much starting the new year with tonnage remaining sequentially the same for January, American Trucking Associations reported.

The freight market finished the year on a downward slope as tonnage declined on both a monthly and annual basis in December, American Trucking Associations reported.

The ATA For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index decreased 1.8% to 112.5 in November from 114.6 in October. The index is down 1% compared with November 2023.

The freight market showed renewed signs of recovery in October after stumbling in September, American Trucking Associations reported.

Freight tonnage ended two months of sequential gains with a decline in September, American Trucking Associations reported Oct. 22.

The trucking industry continued the trend of year-over-year tonnage losses in June after a brief increase the prior month, American Trucking Associations reported July 23.

The trucking industry experienced its first increase in tonnage this year during May, a 1.5% bump, American Trucking Associations reported June 18.
